For years, the ELCA has been working to educate and inspire Lutherans to promote fairness and racial equity in our churches, communities and country. At the 2019 Churchwide Assembly, the “Strategy Toward Authentic Diversity in the ELCA” was adopted. This strategy includes a commitment to digging deeper into the history and theology that “ground, clarify, and justify our call and continuing commitment to ethnic diversity and inclusion.”

As the ELCA works toward a more authentically diverse future, congregations have been tackling this issue head-on in their contexts. This article and study guide, found in Living Lutheran, shares the learning, uncomfortable conversations and growth happening at Cavalry Lutheran Church in Minneapolis through the personal reflections of two women leaders. “Unpacking White Privilege: The Important Work of Making the Church Less Harmful” invites participants to dig deeper, be vulnerable, have uncomfortable conversations, learn and grow.
