Theological Education with Adults- Luther’s Teachings for Today
Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg 61 Seminary Ridge, Gettysburg, PA, United StatesLuther wrote the Large Catechism for instruction in the fundamentals of the Christian faith for Church leaders: pastors, instructors, and for parents at home. The catechism is a treasure of the Lutheran Church to this day. Luther’s insights into matters of faith and the Christian life are central to our Lutheran heritage. As we approach the 500 years of its publication (1529-2029), it is time for a closer look. The Rev. Dr. Nelson Rivera teaches courses in theology and ethics. He has previously taught at Moravian University and Theological Seminary, the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, and as a visiting professor at the Evangelical Seminary of Puerto Rico. His published work covers topics in Lutheran theology, Latinx ministry and spirituality, and on the application of evolutionary epistemology in theology and the natural sciences. Dr. Rivera has served as translator, editor, and theological consultant for worship and church resources. An ordained minister of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), he has served congregations in his native Puerto Rico and the Philadelphia area. Dr. Rivera has served extensively in programs and committees across the academy and the Church, including the Faith and Leadership Academy, the ELCA Theological Roundtable, and currently as member of the 13th Round of the Lutheran-Catholic Dialogue in the USA

Preaching the Paradox: A Festival of Lutheran Proclamation
United Lutheran Seminary Gettysburg campus 61 Seminary Ridge, Gettysburg, United StatesThis inaugural festival at ULS Gettysburg is an invitation for preachers to step away from the weekly grind and into a week shaped by worship, conversation, and shared reflection on the strange and life-giving work of proclaiming the gospel. At the heart of the week is daily worship and preaching in the seminary chapel, grounding us again in the paradox we preach: law and gospel, death and resurrection, despair and promise. Alongside worship, the festival will offer practical workshops meant to add tools to the preacher’s kit, exploring topics like faithfully preaching on demons, creation, and centering the sermon within the whole of worship. Whether you are new to ministry or decades into preaching, this festival is an opportunity to renew imagination, deepen trust in the gospel, and remind us that God is still at work through the spoken word.
