America’s Potluck

Breaking Bread and Building Community to Celebrate America’s 250th Birthday

As we approach the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, many Americans believe our nation is deeply divided. Yet alongside these divisions is a shared desire for connection and belonging. Most Americans want to connect across differences. Research shows that 66% of Americans believe we can learn from people with different viewpoints, and 70% feel a responsibility to do so.

America’s Potluck offers a simple and hopeful response: neighbors coming together to break bread and build community. On Sunday, July 5, 2026, communities across America will gather for potlucks to celebrate America’s 250th birthday – the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. These gatherings are meant to create space for connection, foster a sense of belonging, and encourage interaction among people from all walks of life. America250 Utah is leading America’s Potluck efforts in partnership with all 50 states, including Pennsylvania.

The goal is to create opportunities for people to connect across differences. Potlucks can be a great tool for building bridges because they mirror what’s great about America: everyone contributes something unique, and the diversity of dishes mirrors the diversity of people. It’s a low-pressure, welcoming setting where differences become strengths.

Why Sunday, July 5, 2026?

2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and the tradition of Sunday dinner invites us to slow down and connect with one another. Through dialogue and a shared meal, we can emphasize our commonality and honor the freedoms we enjoy as Americans.

How can you get involved?

Join the movement to build connections within your community by spreading the word and planning to host a potluck on July 5. Better yet, ask a neighbor to co-host the potluck with you! Invite a mix of friends, neighbors, and community members from different backgrounds and ask guests to bring a dish that’s meaningful to them. Set aside time for conversation and activities that spark curiosity and respect.  Take photos and share your experience with the hashtag #AmericasPotluck.
