DESCRIPTION:Transgender Day of Visibility is an annual event that celebrates the joy and resilience of trans people and raises awareness about the discrimination and challenges faced worldwide. Lutherans believe that God values and embraces each person as a beloved child\, that the Spirit gives a diversity of gifts for the common good\, and that Jesus Christ calls us to work for justice. LAMPa also recognizes the challenges faced by transgender youth and is deeply troubled that many youth have to navigate bullying\, discrimination\, and attempts to censor their existence through book bans. Our children deserve learning environments where they can flourish academically\, socially\, and emotionally\, free from bigotry and fear. \nOn March 27 at 12:00 p.m.\, make your voices heard at the Pennsylvania State Capitol front steps. Stand in solidarity with organizations like TAKE and the PA Coalition for Trans Youth who are raising voices in support trans kids in the Commonwealth. Show PA legislators that the faith community demands action that ensures the safety and equality of all our children. For those unable to join in person\, we encourage you to seek out events in your local area commemorating Trans Day of Visibility and to support initiatives for all kids to be safe and included. SUMMARY:Kindling Faith: Annual Nolde Human Rights Lecture with Anthony Ray Hinton
DESCRIPTION:Join this lecture on freedom and justice with Anthony Ray Hinton\, in person or virtually\, hosted by United Lutheran Seminary. \nHinton survived for 30 years on Alabama’s death row. His story is a decades-long journey to exoneration and freedom. In 1985\,  Hinton was convicted of the unsolved murders of two fast-food restaurant managers based on the testimony of ballistics experts for the state who claimed that the crime bullets came from a dusty revolver found in Hinton’s mother’s closet. Without the benefit of a competent expert to challenge the state’s theory (His lawyer hired a ballistics expert who was blind in one eye)\, an all-white jury convicted Hinton\, and he was sentenced to death. \nAfter years of petitioning to have the revolver re-analyzed\, three independent experts concluded that the bullets could not have been fired from his mother’s revolver. With the assistance of the Equal Justice Initiative\, led by attorney Bryan Stevenson\, Hinton was freed in 2015. Since his release\, Hinton has traveled the world sharing his story and discussing the changes that need to be made to prevent similar injustices from happening to other people. In 2018\, he published The Sun Does Shine: How I Found Life and Freedom on Death Row\, which was selected for Oprah’s Book Club and is a New York Times bestseller. SUMMARY:Ash Wednesday at the Capitol
DESCRIPTION:LAMPa staff and ecumenical partners will offer Ashes-to-Go at the state Capitol on Feb. 14 to mark the beginning of Lent. \nWe will be on the front steps of the Capitol  from 8-9 a.m. and 11 a.m.- 1 p.m. to offer prayer and ashes. Although this is not currently a session day\, you may wish to invite your lawmakers and staff who observe but who cannot be in their home congregation on that day. \nWhy Ashes? \nAsh Wednesday is a Christian holy day marking the beginning of the Lenten season. The practice of marking our foreheads with ashes is reminiscent of the ancient practice of showing one’s grief and mourning by wearing sack cloth and sprinkling one’s head with ashes. Ash Wednesday reminds us of our own mortality and launches us into the season of repentance with words that connect us all – “Remember that you are dust\, and to dust you shall return.” In our frail\, mortal selves the unending grace of God\, and our status also as beloved children of God\, is made all the more powerful. \nWhy at the Capitol? \nThe great paradox of Ash Wednesday is the Gospel reading assigned for the day is from Matthew 6\, beginning with words of warning:  “Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them.” The practice of giving and receiving ashes in a place as public as the Pennsylvania State Capitol seems at odds with the words of Jesus\, right? \nAnd yet it is a practice done not for the sake of parading our piety\, but rather to offer a sacred moment of pause\, repentance\, and remembrance to those who might not have another moment in their day to hear these words of truth and hope. We go into public spaces with ashes to remind ourselves and others of our connection and our common need for grace. \nThe Capitol\, where the law of the land is made\, is a space in need of grace as much as anywhere else. Those who hold power need to be reminded of their humanity\, frailty\, and connection to others as much as anyone else. So\, this practice is not antithetical to Jesus’ words\, but rather a way to remind all of our need for Jesus\, and to be mindful of Jesus’ words as he ends the Gospel in today’s lectionary – “where your treasure is\, there your heart will be also.” By offering ashes and prayer to those who pass by on the street and those who work in the Capitol\, we confess our common need for grace.  We affirm the vocation of those who serve and encourage them to carry the grace and love they receive into their work\, so that justice might be achieved for all of God’s beloved. \n

SUMMARY:Driving PA Forward Day in the Capitol
DESCRIPTION:Join LAMPa and our partners in the Driving PA Forward Coalition in Harrisburg for a day of meetings with lawmakers to advocate for HB 769\, Driver’s Licenses for All. This bill would separate driver’s license eligibility from citizenship status\, as it was before 2003. Currently\, 15 states and Washington\, D.C.\, offer driver’s licenses to all\, regardless of immigration status. LAMPa has long been a part of the coalition to advance this policy for the wellbeing of our immigrant neighbors and the safety of all on Pennsylvania roadways. This legislation would help make our roads and communities are safer by enabling more drivers to be licensed and insured and is projected to have economic benefits to the Commonwealth as well. You can find more information and resources on this policy here. \nOn Nov.  14\, be a part of this gathering to show your concern for the livelihoods and safety of immigrants and recognize their \nApple pickers at work in Adams County. Come apple harvest time\, workers come to this area by the thousands. Nationwide\, an estimated 70\,000 workers pick apples every fall. \ncontribution to our communities — particularly our agricultural economy.  The event will feature a Thanksgiving table set in the Capitol Rotunda\, thanking farm workers and all who contribute to the feast day we celebrate\, but which many who provide the food cannot themselves enjoy.  Workers from throughout the food supply chain will speak to highlight the contributions of farm workers and immigrants in making the traditional holiday meal possible. \nLegislative visits will follow.  If you are able to attend\, please let us know\, and we’ll coordinate meetings as LAMPa with our coalition partners.  We expect to wrap up by early afternoon.  Email us with your address (to help us identify your lawmakers) at LAMPa@Llutheranadvocacypa.org with DRIVING in the subject line by Nov. 6.   \nIf you are unable to join us in the Capitol\, but would be like to be in touch with your lawmakers\, please drop us a note\, again\,  with your address\, at LAMPa@Llutheranadvocacypa.org and include DRIVING in the subject line. SUMMARY:Depolarization: A Virtual Workshop for Discipleship in A Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Across the church\, we encounter longing for an end to division and hear yearning in the honest question: How do we respond to people who believe (fill in the blank)? One year from the 2024 election and just weeks from Thanksgiving\, when many of us will gather at tables with family members we may feel we no longer know\, this question takes on deeper urgency. In this virtual interactive workshop\, Silas Kulkarni\, ELCA Director of Strategy and Advocacy\, will give an introduction to the who\, why\, and how of depolarization work\, particularly in the context of faith-based advocacy. As Christians\, we are called by Jesus to love our enemies and to do the work of justice. Sometimes these two calls can seem like they are in tension\, if not outright opposition.  Focusing on the use of tools and trainings from the depolarization organization\, Braver Angels (www.braverangels.org)\, Kulkarni will introduce a model for loving engagement across ideological and cultural divides\, that neither precludes passionate advocacy\, nor requires taking a “middle of the road” position. He will also point to opportunities and resources for learning more and continuing beyond this introductory session. The event is a partnership of LAMPa and United Lutheran Seminary.  The workshop is a rescheduled\, more in-depth exploration of the presentation that had been planned for Lutheran Day in the Capitol 2023. B&W insert. \nAbout the workshop leader: \nSilas Kulkarni is the Director of Strategy & Advocacy in the ELCA Washington office. He focuses on federal policy advocacy as well as the strategic intersections of that work with the broader work of ELCA Witness in Society. Before coming to this position\, he served as Senior Fellow for Public Discourse at the grassroots\, depolarization organization Braver Angels\, helping facilitate productive conversations between conservatives and progressives. He brings this spirit of willingness to engage with politically diverse communities to his work in the ELCA. Kulkarni has also worked as a teacher in low-income communities\, as a grassroots organizer\, and as co-founder and executive director of an educational equity nonprofit. He lives in Washington\, D.C.\, with his wife\, ELCA pastor Julie Bringman\, and their two children.
