SUMMARY:Juneteenth 2024
DESCRIPTION:Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom\, a time to gather in community and commemorate the official\, announced end of slavery in the U.S.\, even if the history of oppression\, racism\, and anti-Black violence that characterized it are still part of our story in church and in the United States.  \nAs ELCA Lutherans set free in Christ to seek community and to seek justice\, it is our duty to act against present injustices\, speak to our shared witness of Christ and of injustice in this world\, and join in the celebration of freedom that is Juneteenth.  \nRead an ELCA blog post from our ELCA Racial Justice Ministries director on reckoning with the legacy of slavery while moving forward here.  \nA Living Lutheran article on Juneteenth\, freedom\, and our common humanity\, written by an ELCA pastor\, is available here.  \nELCA worship resources for Juneteenth can be found here.  \nLAMPa is happy to accompany ELCA communities in the pursuit of justice and to connect them with resources for advocacy. Let us know what you are doing for Juneteenth and how we can support you by sending us an email at LAMPa@lutheranadvocacypa.org.

SUMMARY:Commemoration of the Emmanuel Nine 2024
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, the ELCA commemorates the Emmanuel Nine on June 17. The Emmanuel Nine are nine people who were shot and killed on June 17\, 2015\, during a Bible study at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston\, South Carolina.  \nOur relationship to the shooter\, as well as two of the slain\, reminds us of both our complicity and our calling. The commemoration calls for us to repent for the sins of racism and white supremacy—sins that too often are present in our lives and that too often harm those who are Black and indigenous—and to rededicate ourselves to the Christ who makes us one and makes us whole.  \nThe ELCA offers resources for the commemoration here. Several resources are for worship and sharing in community.  \nYou can sign the ELCA Anti-Racism Pledge here.  \nLAMPa is happy to accompany ELCA communities in the pursuit of justice and to connect them with resources for advocacy. Let us know how you are marking the commemoration of the Emmanuel Nine in your congregation or synod and how we can support you by sending us an email at LAMPa@lutheranadvocacypa.org.

SUMMARY:Earth Day 2024
DESCRIPTION:Earth Day is a time to renew our commitment to be good stewards of God’s creation and to seek justice in relationship with neighbor and creation. There is a movement towards this commitment and relationship powered by people of faith taking action as advocates and as church.  \nEarth Day this year is Monday\, April 22\, 2024. Mark your calendars!  \nWe encourage you to consider integrating creation care into your worship\, faith formation programming\, vigils\, learning opportunities\, and advocacy during this season and during all seasons.  \nLAMPa will provide education and advocacy resources for Earth Day Sunday 2024\, including for hosting a vigil\, so stay tuned for details.  \nLutherans Restoring Creation has held Earth Day worship services in the past and facilitates relationships among Lutherans engaging in the work and practices of restoring creation. Check out their five ways to celebrate Earth Day as church here. You can also view materials\, including video recordings of past Earth Day services\, on their website.  \nIn the spirit of continually reforming as Lutherans\, loving and caring for all of creation\, and living in the teachings of our Social Statement “Caring for Creation: Vision\, Hope\, and Justice\,” Lutherans Restoring Creation has also created Five Theses for Earth Day.  \nLet us know what you are doing in your synod\, congregation\, and community by sending a note to LAMPa@lutheranadvocacypa.org. We at LAMPa would be happy to engage with you and to share advocacy resources to support our collective care for creation on Earth Day.

SUMMARY:Trans Day of Visibility
DESCRIPTION:Transgender Day of Visibility is an annual event that celebrates the joy and resilience of trans people and raises awareness about the discrimination and challenges faced worldwide. Lutherans believe that God values and embraces each person as a beloved child\, that the Spirit gives a diversity of gifts for the common good\, and that Jesus Christ calls us to work for justice. LAMPa also recognizes the challenges faced by transgender youth and is deeply troubled that many youth have to navigate bullying\, discrimination\, and attempts to censor their existence through book bans. Our children deserve learning environments where they can flourish academically\, socially\, and emotionally\, free from bigotry and fear. \nOn March 27 at 12:00 p.m.\, make your voices heard at the Pennsylvania State Capitol front steps. Stand in solidarity with organizations like TAKE and the PA Coalition for Trans Youth who are raising voices in support trans kids in the Commonwealth. Show PA legislators that the faith community demands action that ensures the safety and equality of all our children. For those unable to join in person\, we encourage you to seek out events in your local area commemorating Trans Day of Visibility and to support initiatives for all kids to be safe and included. Every act of solidarity contributes to change and compassion. \nFind out more and register here.

SUMMARY:Kindling Faith: Annual Nolde Human Rights Lecture with Anthony Ray Hinton
DESCRIPTION:Join this lecture on freedom and justice with Anthony Ray Hinton\, in person or virtually\, hosted by United Lutheran Seminary. \nHinton survived for 30 years on Alabama’s death row. His story is a decades-long journey to exoneration and freedom. In 1985\,  Hinton was convicted of the unsolved murders of two fast-food restaurant managers based on the testimony of ballistics experts for the state who claimed that the crime bullets came from a dusty revolver found in Hinton’s mother’s closet. Without the benefit of a competent expert to challenge the state’s theory (His lawyer hired a ballistics expert who was blind in one eye)\, an all-white jury convicted Hinton\, and he was sentenced to death. \nAfter years of petitioning to have the revolver re-analyzed\, three independent experts concluded that the bullets could not have been fired from his mother’s revolver. With the assistance of the Equal Justice Initiative\, led by attorney Bryan Stevenson\, Hinton was freed in 2015. Since his release\, Hinton has traveled the world sharing his story and discussing the changes that need to be made to prevent similar injustices from happening to other people. In 2018\, he published The Sun Does Shine: How I Found Life and Freedom on Death Row\, which was selected for Oprah’s Book Club and is a New York Times bestseller. He was awarded honorary doctorates in 2019 from St. Bonaventure University and in 2023 from Emory University. \n \nYou can visit the event page here. \nYou can register for the event here. \nYou can view the flyer here. \nYou can contact Martin Otto-Zimmann at mzimmann@uls.edu to learn more. \nThis lecture is a program of the ULS Kindling Faith Center for Sabbath\, Rest\, and Formation.

SUMMARY:Connecting the Dots of Long-Term Recovery
DESCRIPTION:Join Lutheran Disaster Response for training and engagement. \n“Connecting the Dots” is good for all who are involved in or working with developing a Long- Term Recovery Group (LTRG). Long-term recovery has many different components\, terminology\, structures\, and players. The players may be community groups\, faith-based\, other non-profit or for-profit organizations\, and government partners and programs. The most important factor is the need to have the flexibility\, to assist the individuals and families as they navigate the many issues\, programs\, and decisions they will face as they and the community move to “connect the dots” of recovery. \nSUGGESTED PREREQUISITES: “Introduction to Disaster or Just in Time: Disaster Response.” \nThursday\, March 14 \n2:00 p.m. ET \nFacilitator: Sean Coffman \nThe event is free and open to the public. \nYou can register here.
