SUMMARY:Wandering Watersheds: Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Join PA IPL for a series that invites you to wander through Pennsylvania’s watersheds – their problems\, their people\, and how we can protect them. We’ll hear from experts at each session including grassroots leaders and organizers\, academics\, riverkeepers\, protection agencies\, and congregations. Together\, let’s get inspired to practice faith-based stewardship of the waters that flow through the Keystone state! \n“What’s a watershed?” you might ask. Watersheds are “areas or ridges of land that separate waters flowing to different rivers\, basins\, or seas”. We have six of them here in Pennsylvania\, and everybody lives in one! This seminar series is designed to be an introduction to watersheds so don’t be intimidated if you don’t know much (yet!)\, but people with watershed literacy are also welcome and encouraged to join! There will be interactive pieces of the seminar series and the more cross-learning we can share with each other\, the better. \nIn conjunction with the seminar series\, we are launching our inaugural Watershed Circle. The program is designed as a supportive cohort for leaders seeking to explore watershed project opportunities on congregation and community land. This 6 month program will begin in January 2025 and is facilitated by the PA IPL team with support from watershed experts! Our first cohort is limited to just 15 congregations/community groups so we encourage you to begin planning and preparing now! Applications will open in November. \nDates: October 29\, November 19\, December 10\, January 14 7PM.  \n1 hour program with optional regional breakout sessions afterwards. \nSession 1 – October 29\, 2024\nTitle: Watershed Stewardship  \nDescription: \nWhat is a watershed? What is watershed stewardship? As our climate is changing\, we are seeing impacts to these vital ecosystems. Congregations\, community groups\, and people of faith and conscience have an important role to play in caring for and stewarding our watersheds. Join us for a launch conversation with experts who will share more about how we define watersheds\, the climate impacts we are witnessing in our Pennsylvania watersheds\, who these impacts are affecting most\, and how people of faith and conscience are rising to the call to steward our shared waters. \nSpeakers for this session include: \nRobin Lewis\, Director of Climate Equity for DMV Interfaith Power & Light \nDoug Miller\, Retired Geography Professor\, Penn State University \nGreg Williams\, volunteer & visionary for PA Plants Native! \nRegistration Link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1028300964867?aff=oddtdtcreator  \n\nSession 2 – November 19\, 2024\nTitle: Watersheds and their Problems \nDescription: \nIn this session of our Wandering Watersheds seminar series\, we are hosting an interactive conversation with some of Pennsylvania’s waterkeepers! Waterkeepers are a crucial part of keeping Pennsylvania waters safe and healthy for all of us. The work of waterkeepers varies as much as our watersheds do! Our waterkeepers will share more about their work and the biggest problems facing Pennsylvania’s waterways. Ever wondered what the most common types of water pollutants are? Wonder no longer as we hear from the experts who spend their time intimately acquainted with the beautiful and the ugly of our waterways. \nSpeakers for this session include: \nTed Evgeniadis\, Executive Director\, Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper \nMORE COMING SOON! \nRegistration Link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1028626699147?aff=oddtdtcreator  \n\nSession 3 – December 10\, 2024\nTitle: Watersheds and their Protection \nDescription: \nIn our third seminar\, we will hear from folks who hold responsibility to protect and regulate Pennsylvania’s waterways. A representative from the PA Department of Environmental Protection as well as the Environmental Protection Agency Region 3 will join us on this call to share about the water work their offices are engaged in. We will additionally hear from experts in water policy and conservation about some of the ways they are working on the ground and in the halls of power to enact positive change for our waterways. \nSpeakers for this session include: \nAmani Reid\, Office of Environmental Justice\, PA Department of Environmental Protection  \nMichael Mehrazar\, Advocacy Manager\, PennFuture \nLindsey Walker\, Senior Manager Education & Community Conservation\, National Wildlife Federation \nRegistration Link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1028629838537?aff=oddtdtcreator  \n\nSession 4 – January 14\, 2025\nTitle: Watersheds and their People  \nDescription: \nIn our final session in this series\, we will learn from the experience of communities who have embarked on watershed stewardship journeys. We will hear the stories of four congregations\, each will share about a watershed project they undertook\, what inspired them to do it\, and what impacts this has had on their community. We will also hear from Monte Garber at Stroud Water Research Center about some small and big steps that congregations can take to begin stewarding waters in their local community. \nSpeakers for this session include: \nMonte Garber\, Watershed Restoration Coordinator\, Stroud Water Research Center \nRepresentative from Akron Mennonite\, Akron PA \nMORE COMING SOON! \nRegistration Link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1028648193437?aff=oddtdtcreator

SUMMARY:"God's work. Our hands." Sunday 2024
DESCRIPTION:As members of the body of Christ\, we are called to serve our neighbors in response to God’s grace. “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday is a chance to renew our commitment to love and to serve in our communities.  \nIt’s an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA)—one church\, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. Let LAMPa help your congregation take your service another step toward justice by adding your voices to the work of your hands. We can tailor education and advocacy opportunities to the service you are already doing in your community. Contact us here. \nService activities offer an opportunity for us to explore one of our most basic convictions as Lutherans: that all of life in Jesus Christ—every act of service\, in every daily calling\, in every corner of life—flows freely from a living\, daring confidence in God’s grace.  \nLast year marked 10 years of “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday with the service day in September 2023.  \nWe look forward to “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday in September 2024 and invite you to share your plans with us at LAMPa@lutheranadvocacypa.org. In addition to our service\, we live out our faith through our advocacy\, and we would be happy to connect you with resources.  \nYou can find resources for “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday here.

SUMMARY:Lutheran Disaster Response Leadership Training Camp
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to Lutheran Disaster Response leadership training camp in Crisfield\, Maryland\, on September 4-6\, 2024. \nAt this training\, participants will join a small group of folks to dive deep into what long term recovery is and why we engage in it\, from both spiritual and practical perspectives. As Lutherans\, our baptismal promises call us to serve all people. Disaster sites are places we are called to be as we seek to come alongside our neighbors facing harm and destruction. Lutheran Disaster Response\, one of only a few organizations doing this work\, is working to build their capacity to help meet needs as our communities face new challenges\, from tornado activity to flash flooding to poor air quality from fires hundreds of miles away. \nWith the training camp\, Lutheran Disaster Response hopes to provide training so that people can step up in a meaningful way with the knowledge and skills that are required for successful community recovery from disasters. \nThey are looking to build a cadre of folks with skills to lead\, support\, and guide community disaster response to support the most vulnerable in our communities. \nCamp will be a two-day training from which participants will leave having a deeper understanding of the elements of disaster recovery through a mix of real-life lived experience and didactic training. \nIt will be held at Camp Kairos\, a traditional volunteer camp of the Eastern Shore Long Term Recovery Committee. All camp expenses are being covered\, except travel to the event and hotel accommodations\, should you wish to stay at a local hotel instead of Camp Kairos. \nSponsorships are available to those who may need financial assistance in order to attend the event. \nAnyone interested in taking part in the training camp can contact Julia Frank. \nYou can register here. \nLutheran Disaster Response of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) has long built networks to meet long-term disaster-related needs related to rebuilding homes\, helping with rental assistance\, and helping survivors navigate months and years of working through recovery\, including in our communities in Pennsylvania and beyond. \nYou can learn more about Lutheran Disaster Response here and find resources here.

SUMMARY:Discipleship in a Democracy: How faith communities can work for justice and peace without jeopardizing their nonprofit status -- even during an election year!
DESCRIPTION:Though public charities\, including churches\, must remain nonpartisan\, they have a critical role to play in civic life — even throughout the election cycle! Not only can public charities engage in issue education and advocacy during election season\, but they can also conduct robust voter and candidate education campaigns and mobilize the public to get out the vote. After this session\, you will have a better understanding of how to legally engage in nonpartisan advocacy during an election without jeopardizing your nonprofit status.  The information will cover federal\, state and municipal compliance.  LAMPa is hosting this webinar in collaboration with Bolder Advocacy\, a project of the Alliance for Justice\, and Attorney Steve Masters of JustLaws\, a Philadelphia-based law firm.  This 1 1/2-hour webinar will also include time for Q&A. \nParticipants will learn: \n\nHow you can continue to educate and advocate on important issues during election years;\nHow you can educate the public through candidate forums and questionnaires;\nHow you can respond to candidate statements objectively;\nHow you can conduct nonpartisan voter registration and ensure get-out-the-vote efforts are conducted legally;\nHow you can safely support or oppose ballot measures without being partisan; and\nHow staff and volunteers’ partisan activities in their personal time can be kept separate from their activities on behalf of the organization.\n\n$25 registration fee gets you a personal link to the webinar and recording of the main presentation. Rostered leaders and Congregation Council members are encouraged to register\, and then watch the recording with others in leadership at your congregation to help everyone understand legal and practical precedence for civic participation. \nRegister here!
