As a companion to our September worship centered upon the “Season of Creation\,” we are delving into how we relate to one another and our surroundings. In the field of biology this practice is the study of ecology. As people of faith how do we approach relating to one another and our world? Our ecology is grounded in grace. \nWe proclaim grace to be God’s gift and love for humanity. It shows up as mercy and forgiveness and love that we receive even when we don’t deserve it. It shows up as making spaces and people whole and holy. It shows up as new life and regeneration in spite of past lives and generations. It shows up as peace and not the constant clashing of wills. \nAnd it always shows up as a reminder that God will never call us disposable. SUMMARY:Our Kairos Moment: The Future of Farming
DESCRIPTION:In June 2024\, the ELCA released “Our Kairos Moment: A Study Guide on Earth’s Climate Crisis.” Over the next four months\, Lutherans Restoring Creation will facilitate a study group on this guide during our connections call time\, each hour focusing on one part (of four) of the study guide. We hope that by going through the guide ourselves\, that participants will gain familiarity and confidence with the study guide and will be able to implement it in their own congregations and communities. \nDuring Part Three\, our theme is “The Future of Farming.” We will think about our connection to our food and how sustainability can be a guiding principle in our food and agriculture. We will address how climate change manifests generationally\, with fewer and older farmers\, but also climate anxiety in younger generations. \nRegister here!

DESCRIPTION:Join PA IPL for a series that invites you to wander through Pennsylvania’s watersheds – their problems\, their people\, and how we can protect them. We’ll hear from experts at each session including grassroots leaders and organizers\, academics\, riverkeepers\, protection agencies\, and congregations. Together\, let’s get inspired to practice faith-based stewardship of the waters that flow through the Keystone state! \n“What’s a watershed?” you might ask. Watersheds are “areas or ridges of land that separate waters flowing to different rivers\, basins\, or seas”. We have six of them here in Pennsylvania\, and everybody lives in one! This seminar series is designed to be an introduction to watersheds so don’t be intimidated if you don’t know much (yet!)\, but people with watershed literacy are also welcome and encouraged to join! There will be interactive pieces of the seminar series and the more cross-learning we can share with each other\, the better. \nIn conjunction with the seminar series\, we are launching our inaugural Watershed Circle. The program is designed as a supportive cohort for leaders seeking to explore watershed project opportunities on congregation and community land. This 6 month program will begin in January 2025 and is facilitated by the PA IPL team with support from watershed experts! Our first cohort is limited to just 15 congregations/community groups so we encourage you to begin planning and preparing now! DESCRIPTION:Earth Day is a time to renew our commitment to be good stewards of God’s creation and to seek justice in relationship with neighbor and creation. There is a movement towards this commitment and relationship powered by people of faith taking action as advocates and as church.  \nEarth Day this year is Monday\, April 22\, 2024. Mark your calendars!  \nWe encourage you to consider integrating creation care into your worship\, faith formation programming\, vigils\, learning opportunities\, and advocacy during this season and during all seasons.  \nLAMPa will provide education and advocacy resources for Earth Day Sunday 2024\, including for hosting a vigil\, so stay tuned for details.  \nLutherans Restoring Creation has held Earth Day worship services in the past and facilitates relationships among Lutherans engaging in the work and practices of restoring creation. Check out their five ways to celebrate Earth Day as church here. You can also view materials\, including video recordings of past Earth Day services\, on their website.  \nIn the spirit of continually reforming as Lutherans\, loving and caring for all of creation\, and living in the teachings of our Social Statement “Caring for Creation: Vision\, Hope\, and Justice\,” Lutherans Restoring Creation has also created Five Theses for Earth Day.  \nLet us know what you are doing in your synod\, congregation\, and community by sending a note to LAMPa@lutheranadvocacypa.org. DESCRIPTION:From Season of Creation’s “Invitation to Join Season of Creation 2022.” \nThe Season of Creation is the annual Christian celebration to listen and respond together to the cry of Creation: the ecumenical family around the world unites to pray and protect our common home\, the Oikos of God. The Season “Celebration” begins 1 September\, the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation\, and ends 4 October\, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi\, the patron saint of ecology beloved by many Christian denominations. Following the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity\, we begin the Season of Creation “Preparation” to reach local leaders and call our communities to participate actively by raising awareness of the theme\, and how to respond to the cry of creation where the Lord calls us in our diverse contexts. \n2022 Theme \nThis year we will unite around the theme\, “Listen to the Voice of Creation.” During the COVID-19 pandemic\, many have become familiar with the concept of being muted in conversations. Many voices are muted in public discourse around climate change and the ethics of Earth-keeping. These are voices of those who suffer the impacts of climate change. These are voices of people who hold generational wisdom about how to live gratefully within the limits of the land. These are voices of a diminishing diversity of more-than-human species. It is the voice of the Earth. The 2022 Season of Creation theme raises awareness of our need to listen to the voice of creation. \nThe Psalmist declares\, “The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims God’s handiwork. Day to day pours forth speech\, and night to night declares knowledge their voice is not heard; yet their voice goes out through all the Earth\, and their words to the end of the world.” (19: 1-4) Creation never ceases to proclaim\, but do we listen? During the Season of Creation\, our common prayer and action can help us listen for the voices of those who are silenced. In prayer we lament the individuals\, communities\, species\, and ecosystems who are lost\, and those whose livelihoods are threatened by habitat loss and climate change. In prayer we center the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor. \nListening to the voice of creation offers members of the Christian family a rich entry point for interfaith and interdisciplinary dialogue and practice. By listening to the voice of all creation\, humans from all cultures and sectors of life can be joined in our vocation to care for our common home (oikos). May this 2022 Season of Creation renew our ecumenical unity! And may this season of prayer and action be a time to Listen to the Voice of Creation\, so that our lives in words and deeds proclaim good news for all the Earth!

This approval differs from an operating permit because an operating permit is for long-term operation\, whereas a plan approval allows for temporary operation.
