SUMMARY:Gathering at the Gate
DESCRIPTION:See below for information on a grassroots movement and advocacy opportunity happening in Washington\, D.C. on September 16-17. Gathering at the Gate is not officially sponsored by the ELCA and LAMPa\, though the advocacy portions will be informed by ELCA Advocacy and Witness in Society staff. \nWe offer this invitation to you who want to respond to the call of Amos 5:15 to “hate evil\, love good\, and establish justice in the gate.” There are virtual options available\, in addition to the in-person gathering. Registration closes September 1. \nAn Invitation to Make A Strong Impact\n2025 has seen relentless attacks on civil rights\, equal rights\, refugee resettlement\, and support for the most vulnerable globally and nationally. People of faith are sensing a call to embody the call of Amos – Hate Evil\, and love good\, and establish justice in the gate (5:15). As Lutheran leaders—bishops\, pastors\, deacons\, and faith leaders—please join us to gather as a public witness to God’s justice and mercy. Together\, we pray to gather 500+ leaders to stand at the “gate” of Washington\, D.C.\, where harmful decisions are made that shape the lives of immigrants and refugees\, LGBTQIA+ people\, and all those who are pushed to the margins\, and are being erased in front of our eyes. This gathering will root and connect us together as we journey forward in our work together. \nWhy We Gather \nWe are Lutheran Christians—rostered and lay—gathering in a time of growing injustice against refugees\, immigrants\, 2SLGBTQIA+ people\, those experiencing poverty\, and many pushed to the margins and harmed by unjust systems. We are compelled by our faith to proclaim good news and act with courage. Rooted in Amos’ call to justice\, we gather not only to pray\, but to build relational power and pursue sustained change. \nThis is more than a two-day event in our hearts and minds. It’s a faithful step into a sustained movement over multiple years—deepening relationships\, naming what is broken\, and discerning a shared call to action. \nWhat Guides Us \nWe are: \nWITH those who suffer violence\, exclusion\, or erasure and organizations that advocate and work on their behalf. \nAGAINST systems and rhetoric that deny dignity. \nCOMMITTED to sustained empowerment\, advocacy\, and organizing beyond this moment. \nCALLED to act from our Christian Lutheran commitments to justice\, accountability\, and mercy. \nWhat Gathering at the Gate Is \nThis is a grassroots movement\, and we pray only a starting point. We are working to create the capacity for leaders to show up\, listen deeply\, and speak clearly. We gather to root ourselves in faith\, amplify marginalized voices\, and build trust that can carry lasting work forward. We gather as Lutherans\, friends\, and neighbors with and for the whole church and world. \n“Be merciful\, just as your God is merciful.” – Luke 6:36 \n  \nLearn more and register.

SUMMARY:Commemoration of the Emmanuel Nine 2024
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, the ELCA commemorates the Emmanuel Nine on June 17. The Emmanuel Nine are nine people who were shot and killed on June 17\, 2015\, during a Bible study at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston\, South Carolina.  \nOur relationship to the shooter\, as well as two of the slain\, reminds us of both our complicity and our calling. The commemoration calls for us to repent for the sins of racism and white supremacy—sins that too often are present in our lives and that too often harm those who are Black and indigenous—and to rededicate ourselves to the Christ who makes us one and makes us whole.  \nThe ELCA offers resources for the commemoration here. Several resources are for worship and sharing in community.  \nYou can sign the ELCA Anti-Racism Pledge here.  \nLAMPa is happy to accompany ELCA communities in the pursuit of justice and to connect them with resources for advocacy. Let us know how you are marking the commemoration of the Emmanuel Nine in your congregation or synod and how we can support you by sending us an email at LAMPa@lutheranadvocacypa.org.

SUMMARY:Earth Day 2024
DESCRIPTION:Earth Day is a time to renew our commitment to be good stewards of God’s creation and to seek justice in relationship with neighbor and creation. There is a movement towards this commitment and relationship powered by people of faith taking action as advocates and as church.  \nEarth Day this year is Monday\, April 22\, 2024. Mark your calendars!  \nWe encourage you to consider integrating creation care into your worship\, faith formation programming\, vigils\, learning opportunities\, and advocacy during this season and during all seasons.  \nLAMPa will provide education and advocacy resources for Earth Day Sunday 2024\, including for hosting a vigil\, so stay tuned for details.  \nLutherans Restoring Creation has held Earth Day worship services in the past and facilitates relationships among Lutherans engaging in the work and practices of restoring creation. Check out their five ways to celebrate Earth Day as church here. You can also view materials\, including video recordings of past Earth Day services\, on their website.  \nIn the spirit of continually reforming as Lutherans\, loving and caring for all of creation\, and living in the teachings of our Social Statement “Caring for Creation: Vision\, Hope\, and Justice\,” Lutherans Restoring Creation has also created Five Theses for Earth Day.  \nLet us know what you are doing in your synod\, congregation\, and community by sending a note to LAMPa@lutheranadvocacypa.org. We at LAMPa would be happy to engage with you and to share advocacy resources to support our collective care for creation on Earth Day.

SUMMARY:Ash Wednesday at the Capitol
DESCRIPTION:LAMPa staff and ecumenical partners will offer Ashes-to-Go at the state Capitol on Feb. 14 to mark the beginning of Lent. \nWe will be on the front steps of the Capitol  from 8-9 a.m. and 11 a.m.- 1 p.m. to offer prayer and ashes. Although this is not currently a session day\, you may wish to invite your lawmakers and staff who observe but who cannot be in their home congregation on that day. \nWhy Ashes? \nAsh Wednesday is a Christian holy day marking the beginning of the Lenten season. The practice of marking our foreheads with ashes is reminiscent of the ancient practice of showing one’s grief and mourning by wearing sack cloth and sprinkling one’s head with ashes. Ash Wednesday reminds us of our own mortality and launches us into the season of repentance with words that connect us all – “Remember that you are dust\, and to dust you shall return.” In our frail\, mortal selves the unending grace of God\, and our status also as beloved children of God\, is made all the more powerful. \nWhy at the Capitol? \nThe great paradox of Ash Wednesday is the Gospel reading assigned for the day is from Matthew 6\, beginning with words of warning:  “Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them.” The practice of giving and receiving ashes in a place as public as the Pennsylvania State Capitol seems at odds with the words of Jesus\, right? \nAnd yet it is a practice done not for the sake of parading our piety\, but rather to offer a sacred moment of pause\, repentance\, and remembrance to those who might not have another moment in their day to hear these words of truth and hope. We go into public spaces with ashes to remind ourselves and others of our connection and our common need for grace. \nThe Capitol\, where the law of the land is made\, is a space in need of grace as much as anywhere else. Those who hold power need to be reminded of their humanity\, frailty\, and connection to others as much as anyone else. So\, this practice is not antithetical to Jesus’ words\, but rather a way to remind all of our need for Jesus\, and to be mindful of Jesus’ words as he ends the Gospel in today’s lectionary – “where your treasure is\, there your heart will be also.” By offering ashes and prayer to those who pass by on the street and those who work in the Capitol\, we confess our common need for grace.  We affirm the vocation of those who serve and encourage them to carry the grace and love they receive into their work\, so that justice might be achieved for all of God’s beloved. \n
