SUMMARY:Ecology of Grace Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Every time we encounter the news here and around the world\, we are no longer able to avoid what seems like an onslaught of alerts about the state of our world amidst storms and floods\, fires\, and drought as levels and frequencies almost too much to bear. And yet\, as Robin Wall Kimmerer writes in The Serviceberry\, An Economy of Abundance\, “All flourishing is mutual.” \nHow do we live faithfully now? As a companion to our September worship centered upon the “Season of Creation\,” we are delving into how we relate to one another and our surroundings. In the field of biology this practice is the study of ecology. As people of faith how do we approach relating to one another and our world? Our ecology is grounded in grace. \nWe proclaim grace to be God’s gift and love for humanity. It shows up as mercy and forgiveness and love that we receive even when we don’t deserve it. It shows up as making spaces and people whole and holy. It shows up as new life and regeneration in spite of past lives and generations. It shows up as peace and not the constant clashing of wills. \nAnd it always shows up as a reminder that God will never call us disposable. We who are given this gift can then practice reflecting it in the world for the sake of the world. \nJoin five weeks of wisdom and insight on what an “Ecology of Grace” can look like and mean from a variety of perspectives:\nSeptember 10th – Rev. Dr Gil Waldkoenig\, United Lutheran Seminary\nSeptember 17th – Rev Dr. Chad Rimmer\, Dean and Rector\, Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary\nSeptember 24th – Dr. Casey Sclar\, The Arboretum at Penn State\nOctober 1st – Dr. Charlie Vasey\, Penn State on building sustainable bio-economies\nOctober 8th – Lutheran Advocacy Ministry and closing Blessing of Creation \nEach week begins promptly at 6:15 pm and ends at 7 pm. \nAttend LIVE in the sanctuary at Grace Lutheran Church\,\n205 S Garner Street\, State College\, PA \nAttend LIVESTREAMED at: https://tinyurl.com/EcologyofGrace \nPost- session video will be available on our YouTube Channel:\nGrace Lutheran State College\, PA\nEmail pastorhetrick@glcpa.org with any questions \nJesus commands us to “love our neighbors as ourselves.” (Mark 12:31). Grace is a place for every body – all ages and stages; races and ethnicities; all sexual orientations\, gender identities\, and gender expressions; those living with neurodiversity\, disabilities and those who currently are not. As a community guided by the call of Jesus\, we are committed to growing in anti

SUMMARY:Lutherans Restoring Creation - August Connections Call
DESCRIPTION:Does it feel like “there are too many things to care about” right now? \nThose with power try to divide and conquer\, making us fight for time\, attention and resources for “our” social justice issue against “other” social justice issues. But it’s a made up fight. We get stronger together! \nThis call will integrate a Lutherans Restoring Creation “Connection Call” with ELCA World Hunger leaders\, some of whom are gathering soon to revitalize their efforts to “do justice\, love kindness\, and [move] humbly with our God.” (Micah 6:8) We’ll meet people who work for justice across multiple sectors and manifestations: migrant\, economic\, racial\, gender or environmental (MERGE). We’ll ask each other what we’re seeing in our communities and how we can work together for a world aligned with God’s just\, kind vision. \nREGISTER HERE!

SUMMARY:Our Kairos Moment: The Future of Farming
DESCRIPTION:In June 2024\, the ELCA released “Our Kairos Moment: A Study Guide on Earth’s Climate Crisis.” Over the next four months\, Lutherans Restoring Creation will facilitate a study group on this guide during our connections call time\, each hour focusing on one part (of four) of the study guide. We hope that by going through the guide ourselves\, that participants will gain familiarity and confidence with the study guide and will be able to implement it in their own congregations and communities. \nDuring Part Three\, our theme is “The Future of Farming.” We will think about our connection to our food and how sustainability can be a guiding principle in our food and agriculture. We will address how climate change manifests generationally\, with fewer and older farmers\, but also climate anxiety in younger generations. \nRegister here!

SUMMARY:Earth Day 2024
DESCRIPTION:Earth Day is a time to renew our commitment to be good stewards of God’s creation and to seek justice in relationship with neighbor and creation. There is a movement towards this commitment and relationship powered by people of faith taking action as advocates and as church.  \nEarth Day this year is Monday\, April 22\, 2024. Mark your calendars!  \nWe encourage you to consider integrating creation care into your worship\, faith formation programming\, vigils\, learning opportunities\, and advocacy during this season and during all seasons.  \nLAMPa will provide education and advocacy resources for Earth Day Sunday 2024\, including for hosting a vigil\, so stay tuned for details.  \nLutherans Restoring Creation has held Earth Day worship services in the past and facilitates relationships among Lutherans engaging in the work and practices of restoring creation. Check out their five ways to celebrate Earth Day as church here. You can also view materials\, including video recordings of past Earth Day services\, on their website.  \nIn the spirit of continually reforming as Lutherans\, loving and caring for all of creation\, and living in the teachings of our Social Statement “Caring for Creation: Vision\, Hope\, and Justice\,” Lutherans Restoring Creation has also created Five Theses for Earth Day.  \nLet us know what you are doing in your synod\, congregation\, and community by sending a note to LAMPa@lutheranadvocacypa.org. We at LAMPa would be happy to engage with you and to share advocacy resources to support our collective care for creation on Earth Day.

SUMMARY:Driving PA Forward Day in the Capitol
DESCRIPTION:Join LAMPa and our partners in the Driving PA Forward Coalition in Harrisburg for a day of meetings with lawmakers to advocate for HB 769\, Driver’s Licenses for All. This bill would separate driver’s license eligibility from citizenship status\, as it was before 2003. Currently\, 15 states and Washington\, D.C.\, offer driver’s licenses to all\, regardless of immigration status. LAMPa has long been a part of the coalition to advance this policy for the wellbeing of our immigrant neighbors and the safety of all on Pennsylvania roadways. This legislation would help make our roads and communities are safer by enabling more drivers to be licensed and insured and is projected to have economic benefits to the Commonwealth as well. You can find more information and resources on this policy here. \nOn Nov.  14\, be a part of this gathering to show your concern for the livelihoods and safety of immigrants and recognize their \nApple pickers at work in Adams County. Come apple harvest time\, workers come to this area by the thousands. Nationwide\, an estimated 70\,000 workers pick apples every fall. \ncontribution to our communities — particularly our agricultural economy.  The event will feature a Thanksgiving table set in the Capitol Rotunda\, thanking farm workers and all who contribute to the feast day we celebrate\, but which many who provide the food cannot themselves enjoy.  Workers from throughout the food supply chain will speak to highlight the contributions of farm workers and immigrants in making the traditional holiday meal possible. \nLegislative visits will follow.  If you are able to attend\, please let us know\, and we’ll coordinate meetings as LAMPa with our coalition partners.  We expect to wrap up by early afternoon.  Email us with your address (to help us identify your lawmakers) at LAMPa@Llutheranadvocacypa.org with DRIVING in the subject line by Nov. 6.   \nIf you are unable to join us in the Capitol\, but would be like to be in touch with your lawmakers\, please drop us a note\, again\,  with your address\, at LAMPa@Llutheranadvocacypa.org and include DRIVING in the subject line. We will respond with more information. \nTo join our statewide network of advocates working to make Pennsylvania a state that stands for welcome\, please email us at LAMPa@Llutheranadvocacypa.org with IMMIGRATION in the subject line and staff will reach out to you.

SUMMARY:Beginning of the "Season of Creation"
DESCRIPTION:From Season of Creation’s “Invitation to Join Season of Creation 2022.” \nThe Season of Creation is the annual Christian celebration to listen and respond together to the cry of Creation: the ecumenical family around the world unites to pray and protect our common home\, the Oikos of God. The Season “Celebration” begins 1 September\, the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation\, and ends 4 October\, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi\, the patron saint of ecology beloved by many Christian denominations. Following the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity\, we begin the Season of Creation “Preparation” to reach local leaders and call our communities to participate actively by raising awareness of the theme\, and how to respond to the cry of creation where the Lord calls us in our diverse contexts. \n2022 Theme \nThis year we will unite around the theme\, “Listen to the Voice of Creation.” During the COVID-19 pandemic\, many have become familiar with the concept of being muted in conversations. Many voices are muted in public discourse around climate change and the ethics of Earth-keeping. These are voices of those who suffer the impacts of climate change. These are voices of people who hold generational wisdom about how to live gratefully within the limits of the land. These are voices of a diminishing diversity of more-than-human species. It is the voice of the Earth. The 2022 Season of Creation theme raises awareness of our need to listen to the voice of creation. \nThe Psalmist declares\, “The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims God’s handiwork. Day to day pours forth speech\, and night to night declares knowledge their voice is not heard; yet their voice goes out through all the Earth\, and their words to the end of the world.” (19: 1-4) Creation never ceases to proclaim\, but do we listen? During the Season of Creation\, our common prayer and action can help us listen for the voices of those who are silenced. In prayer we lament the individuals\, communities\, species\, and ecosystems who are lost\, and those whose livelihoods are threatened by habitat loss and climate change. In prayer we center the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor. \nListening to the voice of creation offers members of the Christian family a rich entry point for interfaith and interdisciplinary dialogue and practice. By listening to the voice of all creation\, humans from all cultures and sectors of life can be joined in our vocation to care for our common home (oikos). May this 2022 Season of Creation renew our ecumenical unity! And may this season of prayer and action be a time to Listen to the Voice of Creation\, so that our lives in words and deeds proclaim good news for all the Earth!
