DESCRIPTION:1 hour | Online via Zoom \nSpecial Guest: Solveig Muus\, Grand Canyon Synod Hunger Leader and Lutheran Advocacy Ministry in Arizona \nJoin special guest Solveig Muus as she shares the story behind the 40-40-40 Region 2 Lenten Challenge\, and how the Challenge\, now in its third year\, connects hundreds of individuals in congregations across the 5 synods in Region 2 with each other\, as well as with the work of ELCA World Hunger and Lutheran Disaster Response (LDR). The Lenten Challenge for 2025 supports LDR and our church’s call to respond to non-conventional disasters\, including the work at Navajo Evangelical Lutheran Mission (NELM). NELM is a 70-year-old ministry of the ELCA in Rock Point\, Arizona\, where more than half the households either do not have running water or do not have access to safe drinking water. In addition to various spiritual practices\, each year’s Challenge includes an opportunity for giving; gifts generated through this year’s challenge support LDR projects such as providing holding tanks and an automated water distribution system for filtration and chlorination for our siblings in Christ on the Navajo reservation. \nRegister through LDR’s online portal.

Following the storm\, distrust hampered recovery and delayed the Disaster Case Management process. In that space\, the Southeastern Synod hired Sheronda Armstrong to work with the Long-Term Recovery Committee. SUMMARY:Lutheran Disaster Response Leadership Training Camp
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to Lutheran Disaster Response leadership training camp in Crisfield\, Maryland\, on September 4-6\, 2024. \nAt this training\, participants will join a small group of folks to dive deep into what long term recovery is and why we engage in it\, from both spiritual and practical perspectives. As Lutherans\, our baptismal promises call us to serve all people. Disaster sites are places we are called to be as we seek to come alongside our neighbors facing harm and destruction. Lutheran Disaster Response\, one of only a few organizations doing this work\, is working to build their capacity to help meet needs as our communities face new challenges\, from tornado activity to flash flooding to poor air quality from fires hundreds of miles away. \nWith the training camp\, Lutheran Disaster Response hopes to provide training so that people can step up in a meaningful way with the knowledge and skills that are required for successful community recovery from disasters. \nThey are looking to build a cadre of folks with skills to lead\, support\, and guide community disaster response to support the most vulnerable in our communities. \nCamp will be a two-day training from which participants will leave having a deeper understanding of the elements of disaster recovery through a mix of real-life lived experience and didactic training. \nIt will be held at Camp Kairos\, a traditional volunteer camp of the Eastern Shore Long Term Recovery Committee. DESCRIPTION:Join Lutheran Disaster Response for training and engagement. \nIn this interactive\, two-day\, in-person course\, participants will learn about disaster case management\, its role in disaster recovery\, and the benefits a disaster case manager can offer to communities impacted by disaster. \nParticipants will learn about disaster case management and essential considerations affecting a client’s recovery through discussion\, individual activities\, and group training exercises. \nThis course explores the vital skills and considerations needed to be a disaster case manager\, demonstrates techniques for working with clients and the development of a recovery plan\, and how to present a client’s case to a Long-Term Recovery Group for funding. \nLutheran Disaster Response and its affiliates developed this course to build the capacity to sustain professional\, standardized disaster services\, strengthen the resilience of communities affected by disasters that receive little attention\, and reduce people’s suffering\, especially vulnerable populations who are often underserved and uninsured.
