SUMMARY:Ash Wednesday at the Capitol
DESCRIPTION:LAMPa staff and ecumenical partners will offer Ashes-to-Go at the state Capitol on Feb. 14 to mark the beginning of Lent. \nWe will be on the front steps of the Capitol  from 8-9 a.m. and 11 a.m.- 1 p.m. to offer prayer and ashes. Although this is not currently a session day\, you may wish to invite your lawmakers and staff who observe but who cannot be in their home congregation on that day. \nWhy Ashes? \nAsh Wednesday is a Christian holy day marking the beginning of the Lenten season. The practice of marking our foreheads with ashes is reminiscent of the ancient practice of showing one’s grief and mourning by wearing sack cloth and sprinkling one’s head with ashes. Ash Wednesday reminds us of our own mortality and launches us into the season of repentance with words that connect us all – “Remember that you are dust\, and to dust you shall return.” In our frail\, mortal selves the unending grace of God\, and our status also as beloved children of God\, is made all the more powerful. \nWhy at the Capitol? \nThe great paradox of Ash Wednesday is the Gospel reading assigned for the day is from Matthew 6\, beginning with words of warning:  “Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them.” The practice of giving and receiving ashes in a place as public as the Pennsylvania State Capitol seems at odds with the words of Jesus\, right? \nAnd yet it is a practice done not for the sake of parading our piety\, but rather to offer a sacred moment of pause\, repentance\, and remembrance to those who might not have another moment in their day to hear these words of truth and hope. We go into public spaces with ashes to remind ourselves and others of our connection and our common need for grace. \nThe Capitol\, where the law of the land is made\, is a space in need of grace as much as anywhere else. Those who hold power need to be reminded of their humanity\, frailty\, and connection to others as much as anyone else. So\, this practice is not antithetical to Jesus’ words\, but rather a way to remind all of our need for Jesus\, and to be mindful of Jesus’ words as he ends the Gospel in today’s lectionary – “where your treasure is\, there your heart will be also.” By offering ashes and prayer to those who pass by on the street and those who work in the Capitol\, we confess our common need for grace.  We affirm the vocation of those who serve and encourage them to carry the grace and love they receive into their work\, so that justice might be achieved for all of God’s beloved. \n

DESCRIPTION:Across the church\, we encounter longing for an end to division and hear yearning in the honest question: How do we respond to people who believe (fill in the blank)? One year from the 2024 election and just weeks from Thanksgiving\, when many of us will gather at tables with family members we may feel we no longer know\, this question takes on deeper urgency. In this virtual interactive workshop\, Silas Kulkarni\, ELCA Director of Strategy and Advocacy\, will give an introduction to the who\, why\, and how of depolarization work\, particularly in the context of faith-based advocacy. As Christians\, we are called by Jesus to love our enemies and to do the work of justice. Sometimes these two calls can seem like they are in tension\, if not outright opposition.  Focusing on the use of tools and trainings from the depolarization organization\, Braver Angels (www.braverangels.org)\, Kulkarni will introduce a model for loving engagement across ideological and cultural divides\, that neither precludes passionate advocacy\, nor requires taking a “middle of the road” position. He will also point to opportunities and resources for learning more and continuing beyond this introductory session. The event is a partnership of LAMPa and United Lutheran Seminary.  The workshop is a rescheduled\, more in-depth exploration of the presentation that had been planned for Lutheran Day in the Capitol 2023. LAMPa is collaborating on this event. \n \nThis rural rostered leaders retreat features the keynote “Bold Humility from Appalachia to Guatemala and Back” with the Rev. Dr. Jennifer Hope-Tringali and an interactive workshop “Depolarization and Church Advocacy: An Introduction” with Silas Kulkarni\, Director of Strategy & Advocacy in the ELCA Washigton office\, on Friday. Such ideologies can lead to the erosion of democracy and the rise of authoritarianism and fascism. Rev. Dr. Pamela Cooper-White\, author of The Psychology of Christian Nationalism offers keen insights into the nature of this movement and how critical-thinking Christians can provide a much-needed counter-narrative to this fear-based rhetoric. \nSPEAKER: The Rev. Pamela Cooper-White\, Ph.D.\, is the Christiane Brooks Johnson Professor of Psychology and Religion and for the past 3 years served as Dean and Vice President for Academic Affairs\, at Union Theological Seminary\, New York.  She also serves as Assisting Priest at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City.  She earned her MDiv and a PhD in historical musicology from Harvard University\, and a PhD in clinical social work at the Chicago Institute for Clinical Social Work. \nPrior to serving at Union Seminary\, she was the Ben G. and Nancye Clapp Gautier Professor of Pastoral Theology\, Care and Counseling at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur\, Georgia\, and Co-Director of the Atlanta Theological Association’s ThD program in pastoral counseling; and from1999-2008 she was associate and then full Professor of Pastoral Theology at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia (now ULS). \nIn person on the Philadelphia campus of ULS and livestreamed on the ULS YouTube channel. \nThis event is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Drop by an Advocacy Cafe to hear from ELCA advocacy community leaders about timely topics. The 30-minute presentations will be offered twice on the same day. The day session will wrap-up with 15-minutes for a Q&A session with panelists. The evening session will wrap-up differently\, with 25 minutes to meet in a small group with others to exchange experiences and ideas. \nTue. As a church we do not endorse a particular candidate\, party or form of government or strive for a Christian one. DESCRIPTION:Environmental Justice Advisory Board Meeting in Johnstown\, PA— August 18  \nPA DEP’s Environmental Justice Advisory Board (EJAB) will host its annual traveling meeting on Thursday\, August 18 from 1-7pm at the Cambria County Library – 248 Main Street\, Johnstown\, PA 15901. The traveling meeting offers EJAB members an opportunity to learn about environmental justice issues in various regions of the commonwealth – this year’s focus is on southwestern Pennsylvania.\nThe meeting is open to the public and will feature presentations from community and non-profit organizations based in southwestern Pennsylvania. Additionally\, there will be updates from DEP on the West Virginia vs. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) decision and the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). On July 23\, 2022\, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) published a draft air quality plan approval to allow the construction and initial temporary operation of a leachate (liquid that leaches or drains from the landfill) evaporation system at Westmoreland Sanitary Landfill. This approval differs from an operating permit because an operating permit is for long-term operation\, whereas a plan approval allows for temporary operation. This plan approval allows for the construction and temporary operation of the leachate evaporation system\, an air contamination source. \n\nThe DEP will hold two public hearings related to the plan approval:\n\nIn-Person: Wednesday\, August 31\, 2022 at Rostraver Central Fire Department\, 1100 Fells Church Road\, Rostraver Township\, PA 15012 at 6:00pm.\nVirtual: Thursday\, September 1\, 2022 held virtually (online and by phone) via the Webex platform at 6:00pm.\n\nIndividuals who wish to observe or present testimony at either hearing are asked to register in advance by contacting Lauren Fraley at lfraley@pa.gov or 412-442-4203. Registration for the hearing will be taken through 4:00 PM the day before each hearing. Testimony will be limited to three minutes for DEP to receive as many comments as possible.
