June 14 Rally for Tuition Equity
Jun 14, 2017 @ 10:30 am - 11:30 am
This month, thousands of Pennsylvania students will proudly move tassels on their mortarboards, signaling the successful achievement of state standards and benchmarks for learning. For most, it is a time for new opportunities. For some students, no matter how high their grades, the door to higher education is closed because of their immigration status. Even if all they can remember is life and school in Pennsylvania, they may be categorized as international students, facing tuition rates as much as five times higher than in-state students.
Lutherans in the Reading area, including LAMPa policy council member the Rev. Bruce Osterhout, have helped some amazing young graduates realize the promise of a college education through their work to provide scholarships through the Greater Reading Immigration Project (GRIP). They want to see the tuition hurdle eliminated for promising students across the Commonwealth.
HB1042 would eliminate the immigration status of these students as a barrier to higher education.
Join the Pennsylvania Immigration and Citizenship Coalition and the GRIP to help raise awareness of the importance of tuition equity for undocumented students graduating from Pennsylvania high schools. Rally in the capitol’s main rotunda at 10:30 a.m. and join PICC and GRIP advocates in visits with lawmakers to speak up for the immigrants in your life and community.
