#FreeTheVulnerable Action On May 14
May 14, 2020
The PA Council of Churches has been working closely with the Abolitionist Law Center on a grant to work toward minimizing the practice of solitary confinement in Pennsylvania. In the wake of the COVID- 19 crisis, the focus has shifted to freeing vulnerable populations from prison, so that people are not sentenced to die in prison where access to adequate health care is limited and social distancing is impossible.
A coalition of criminal justice reform groups called #FreeTheVulnerable is putting together a virtual sign day. The action is simple. If you would like to support this movement, you are asked to make a sign showing support for people in prison and hang it somewhere outside where it will be visible. You are also asked to take a picture of the sign and share it on social media with the hashtag #FreeTheVulnerable. This graphic may be shared on Instagram to advertise your action.
The pictures will be compiled into a collage to show solidarity and support for those in prison and their families. They will also be shared with local politicians asking for much needed reform.
