Building on What Works to Address Housing Crisis in PA

April 28

EVERYONE DESERVES A PLACE TO CALL HOME.  Even before the pandemic, the country was in the midst of a housing crisis. One in four renters spent more than half of their income on rent, and homelessness rates were rising, with more than 13,000 experiencing homelessness any day in Pennsylvania, including more than 31,000 children over the course of the previous year. A growing number of people have been unable to afford a place to call home, and the number of homes accessible to people with disasbilities remains at low levels despite increasing need. The pandemic exacerbated the crisis, and our ministrires are stretching to meet the needs of rising numbers of people facing homelessness or living in unsafe conditions.

Join us online or in person at United Lutheran Seminary’s Gettysburg Campus from 10-11:30 a.m. on April 28 to hear what is happening on the front lines of this ministry and learn how a program Lutheran advocates have long championed is part of a bipartisan effort to address the crisis.

The Pa. Housing Affordability and Rehabilitation Enhancement Fund, also known as the state housing trust fund, expands opportunities for people in need and revitalizes communities. The program creates, rehabs, and supports local housing, blight remediation, supportive services, homeownership counseling, and home purchase. It has supported more than 7,000 households since its start in 2012, with projects in every county.

As housing prices soar, lawmakers are proposing to lift the cap on the amount that can go to the fund. Learn how this program is working, what it could mean for neighbors in need in your community, and how you can help. Hear from county housing officials, advocates who have experienced homelessness themselves and those who have been engaged in ministry with them.

Although there will be time for Q&A, to help our presenters prepare, you can submit questions in advance to LAMPa@lutheranadvocacypa.org. Those who wish to join us online will receive a link the day before the event.
