Get Ready for Faith Climate Action Week
April 17 - April 26
Faith Climate Action Week (previously know as the Preach-In on Global Warming) is scheduled for April 17 – 26, 2020. Interfaith Power & Light’s campaign for climate healing and action is a whole week of activities in celebration around Earth Day. Now in its tenth year, and with the help of people like you, the Faith Climate Action Week has reached close to 2-million people with more than 5,000 climate and Earth stewardship sermons and talks nationwide.
In light of the spread of COVID-19 switch your events to virtual events. The Faith Climate Action Week kit can help you plan virtual events or switch your event to virtual.
If your public Sacred Activism event is cancelled, encourage members of your congregation to post photos of themselves with their placards to social media using the hashtag #FaithClimateActionWeek during Faith Climate Action Week. Your event will have greater impact when everyone does it at the same time using the same hashtag #FaithClimateActionWeek. Be sure to write a faith-based message and the name of your congregation on your placard.
This year Lutherans Restoring Creation is teaming up with Interfaith Power & Light’s annual Faith Climate Action Week. The theme this year is we act “For the Love of Trees.” Deforestation is the second leading cause of climate change and produces about 24% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Scientists say that deforestation in tropical rainforests adds more carbon dioxide to the atmosphere than the sum total of all the cars and trucks on the world’s roads.
Plant trees on congregational property, at members’ homes, or in public spaces. Bless the trees with the ceremony in the “For Love of Trees” materials in the Faith Climate Action Week kit. Order your kit here. Report the total number of trees planted by your congregation and congregants at the same website for a grand total of all trees planted by Faith Climate Action Week partners!
During these ten days in April during Earth Month everyone is asked to focus on how you can take action to protect our climate. You are invited to find joy and rejuvenation in the natural world and reconnect to why you love and protect our planet.
Folks are encouraged to extend earlier or later as you wish, particularly by creating a series of events and actions to grow a season of loving earth and loving one another, that might stretch handily from Valentine’s Day to Earth Day. Learn more.
