“For Such A Time As This” Pray. Fast. Act. For Education and Economic Opportunity
FOR SUCH A TIME (APRIL): The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and The Episcopal Church continue our united call to Pray, Fast and Act in support of good policies and programs that provide opportunities for the respect and the dignity of all people.
This month, our focus is on education and economic opportunity initiatives. Although the U.S. government facilitates a variety of programs, all too often families find it nearly impossible to break out of poverty. Many families work low-wage and low-skill jobs, yet still struggle to keep up with their needs.
Pray for the working poor of our nation, that while we fight to keep our families housed, fed, and clothed, that we may also expand educational opportunities and training for better family-supporting wages.
Fast in solidarity with those who, while they labor tirelessly, still struggle to provide for themselves and their families. Consider including in your fast an action to donate savings from unconsumed meals to educational scholarships or to elementary school reading and library programs.
Act by writing to Congress on April 21st and demand robust federal funding for educational programs from early childhood to adult and trade schools. Study the one-pager on the connection between economic opportunity, education, and poverty.
